    Solutions for Power conversion

    Laminated busbars

Mersen’s low inductance laminated busbars connecting power modules and capacitors not only improve overall system reliability but greatly optimize its electrical performance.

    Cooling Solutions

Mersen’s cooling solutions are vital for maintaining the optimal temperature of always more demanding power conversion designs of the BESS inverters.

    DC link Capacitors

The Mersen film capacitors are recognized for their very low inductance, robust design and long lifetime.
Mersen offers a wide range of DC-link capacitors to meet the constraints of today’s need for compacity, high current, temperature, and connection options.

    Power Stacks

Mersen offers SiC or IGBT power stacks, custom-designed, air or liquid-cooled, ranging from a few of 10’s of kVA to several 100’s of kVA, in any kind of topology and ratings

    Solutions for Batteries

Infinicell busbars for smart battery cell connection

The lightweight single layer Infini∞cell bus bar solution is a combination of laminated insulation and thin conductive materials. Thanks to the thin conductive layer, battery cells can be easily welded to the bus bar connections using laser welding. The Infini∞cell bus bar design has two conductive layers: one for conducting power to the cells and the other layer used to monitor the status of battery cells.

    Battery Thermal management

Li-ion batteries are increasingly used in EV and Electrical Storage applications. However, its chemistry is extremely sensitive to thermal management conditions. Proper battery cooling technology can dramatically reduce the negative influence of temperature on battery pack, effectively improve power battery efficiency, improve the safety in use, reduce the aging rate, and extend its service life.
Mersen has developed a complete range of battery cooling solutions to address every application, from low to very high C-rate.

  • Questions you might have about protection of BESS:

    • What type of fuse is suitable for Battery Energy Storage Systems?

gBat and aBat fuses, according to IEC60269-7, are suitable for BESS.

They are DC fuses, validated to clear specified fault currents that can occur in BESS applications under their rated voltage.

The goal in BESS protection is to have a solution that safely disconnects the power and can cover the full spectrum of current loads. Thus, most of the times, the protection strategy involves 2 devices in series: a resettable DC contactor, protected upstream by an Over Current Protection Device, covering faults greater than the breaking capacity of the DC contactor.

    • How does the breaking capacity of fuse is a key parameter for selection?

In BESS, prospective fault current can reach very high values due to parallelization of battery racks and addition of fault current provided by each one.

The breaking capacity is the prospective fault current a fuse is capable to break at a stated voltage.

Thus, breaking capacity of fuse shall be higher than the prospective fault current the fuse must clear.

    • What type of surge protection is required for the battery storage system?

SPDs should be installed on the AC and DC side of these systems.

    • How do SPDs integrate with the battery system’s inverter or energy management system?

SPDs are necessary to protect the sensitive electronics within inverters, battery management systems, communications, HMIs, relaying and safety circuits, and within control panels or other equipment within a BESS facility.  SPDs may be most effective when installed close to the electronics they are intended to protect.

    • Are there any regulatory or industry standards that guide the selection and installation of SPDs?

Mersen SPDs are tested to be certified to IEC61643 series and UL1449 5th edition or a combination of the both, depending on the type of product and performance required for the market for which it’s intended.

Under IEC/EN standards, a specific standardization initiative is in process for DC SPDs, i.e IEC/EN 61643-41 Low-voltage surge protective devices - Part 41: Surge protective devices connected to DC low-voltage power systems - Requirements and test methods. This will help designers with the spec-in of the right DC SPDs in installations where high prospective d.c. short circuit currents may be delivered, typically much higher than in classical PV systems.
