Environmental Impact
Supported by a dedicated organization, the objective of our environmental policy is to reduce the environmental impact of our products and industrial operations. It is based on the commitment of the Executive Committee and shared with all employees.
Mersen acts against global warming
The use of natural gas and electricity in our production processes, in particular the graphite and felt manufacturing processes are the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions (scopes 1&2).
Under its new 2022-2027 CSR Roadmap, the Group undertook to reduce the intensity of its greenhouse gas emissions (scopes 1&2) by 35% by 2027 compared to 2022 by working on :
- Reductions in energy consumption
- Use of renewable or less GHG-intensive energy sources
- Offsetting of emissions

Renewable energy
Self-generation of renewable electricity
Mersen has 11 manufacturing sites equipped with solar power plants. 7 are designed for self-consumption and the others, partly for self-consumption and partly for exportation to the grid.
In 2022, 24% of the electricity used by the Saint-Bonnet site (France) came from self-generation.
Waste recycling
In order to reduce the environmental impact of its industrial sites, waste management has become an important environmental issue for the Group. Priority has been given to increasing waste recycling.

Water
Reduction of water consumption
Water is an essential resource for the planet. Mersen uses water primarily to cool equipment used in heating processes, ensuring water quality before disposal. Discharges are subject to rigorous controls to avoid any risk of pollution
Mersen contributes to the sustainable management of water resources by setting a target to reduce the intensity of its water consumption.

Biodiversity Protection
Mersen is committed to protecting biological biodiversity so as to ensure the protection and survival of animal and plant species, genetic diversity and natural ecosystems. This commitment is based on the prevention, management and repair of damage to natural systems resulting from the Group’s activities and their emissions and waste.
In 2021, the Group has set up a biodiversity map of Its sites.
At the end of 2023, three sites are located within one or more protected areas, and 11 are located within a kilometer of one. All sites have received detailed information on their positions and their responsibility with respect to biodiversity.
No site reported biodiversity loss.
