    CALCARB® CBCF, a unique microstructure…

    CALCARB® CBCF is made up of carbon fibres measuring just a few millimeters in length, emanating from rayon fibres. These fibres are interconnected in a matrix produced by the carbonisation of phenolic resin.

    The material is then vacuum-treated at temperatures above 2,000°C to ensure its temperature stability and the absence of outgassing. As a benchmark, the material contains no more than 500 ppm of impurities. Impurity levels below 20 ppm can be achieved through a halogen purification process.

    Calcarb® for extreme insulation performance

    CALCARB® provides the best thermal insulation properties at a high temperature, making it the material of choice among our customers concerned about the energy efficiency of their process. Density and grade differences are used to modulate the material's thermal characteristics:

    • CALCARB® CBCF 14VF-2000 for unparalleled insulation performance
    • CALCARB® CBCF 18-2000 or CBCF 25-2000 for modulating between insulation and gas permeability

    Calcarb® to optimize the efficiency of your processes

    CALCARB® rigid insulation is much easier to machine than other high temperature insulation materials. Its homogeneity, combined with its ability to be machined into very complex shapes, enables precise thermal gradient control in high temperature processes. Standard dimensions:

    • Plates up to 160 x 1,500 x 1,500 mm
    • Cylinders up to Æ 1,100 mm

    Calcarb® for an extended service life, even in the most aggressive environments

    Mersen has developed a complete range of processes designed to reinforce the resistance of CALCARB® CBCF in aggressive environments:

    • Pyrocarbon infiltration-CVI protects the material from the action of reactive gases to its core.
    • A unique development now allows the CALCARB® insulation using silicon carbide SiC-CVI to reduce the felt's reactivity tohydrogen above 1,000°C.
    • To ensure gas impermeability and significantly reduce the generation of dust through erosion,CALCARB® can be surface coated by Calfoil,Calcoat and Calcoat CVD processes.

    CALCARB® soft graphite felt by MERSEN for its high flexibility and adaptability

    Its high geometric adaptability enables even the most complex shapes for insulating almost any system design to be implemented. Specific shapes can also be produced in large quantities through punching. Soft felts can be stabilized through chemical vapor infiltration, or CVI, with carbon and transformed into self-supporting structures.

    CALCARB® graphite soft felt by MERSEN is a rayon based material that is an ideal choice for vacuum furnaces or process temperatures above 2000° C. Carbon soft felt is an alternative to graphite felt for applications where chemical purity is not as critical. 

    CALCARB® graphite felt is produced in in widths up to 1,2 meter and available in different thicknesses. It is typically processed to temperature above 2200° C, and can be purified to less than 20 ppm total ash content. Carbon felt is typically processed to a minimum temperature of 1400° C.

    CALCARB® soft felt by MERSEN is flexible and easy to cut, making this product easy to adapt with small bend radius possibilities. Soft felt is the ideal solution when vibrations are generated by high gaz quenching rates.
