In many chemical applications, it is precisely this resistance that makes it the material of choice for heat exchangers, especially when the fluids in contact are highly corrosive.
However, like any industrial material, its service life depends heavily on how the unit is operated.
A properly sized graphite heat exchanger, used within its intended operating ranges and maintained regularly, can remain in service for many, many years.

It is essential to avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or pressure, which can cause thermal or mechanical shock, but also to prevent the heat exchanger from becoming fouled. The sooner the heat exchanger is cleaned, the easier it is to carry out the work, and, above all, the lower the risk of the heat exchanger breaking.
Under optimal conditions, some heat exchangers operate for more than 40 years without any particular issues, while maintaining very high levels of thermal performance. There is no loss of performance over time unless the unit becomes fouled; however, in such cases, this is not related to the material itself.
In such cases, the graphite does not degrade: it continues to perform its functions of heat transfer and chemical resistance.
Conversely, a unit subjected to unsuitable operating conditions may show signs of fatigue much more quickly, sometimes after only a few months.
This is generally not due to the graphite itself, but rather to the stresses placed on the equipment:
- too rapid startups,
- significant thermal gradients,
- pressure surges (water hammer),
- maintenance issues,
- or use outside of the intended conditions.
It is therefore important to distinguish between the material’s theoretical service life and the actual service life of the equipment.
Graphite can have a very long service life when used correctly, but the service life of the entire unit also depends on its operating environment, operating cycles, the quality of its installation, the extent of fouling, and the thoroughness of its maintenance.

In summary, there is no single service life that applies to all units. A graphite heat exchanger that is used and maintained properly can operate for several decades.
The key is to adhere to operating conditions, perform preventive inspections, and avoid thermal or mechanical shocks that can weaken the equipment. A build-up of dirt on the heat exchanger is the first warning sign that maintenance is required.
