Mersen: reinforcing in extruded graphite

Mersen reinforces its position in specialty extruded graphite in Europe

  • Acquisition of Advanced Graphite Materials Italy, a benchmark European player in the finishing of customized extruded graphite parts
  • Synergies with the Columbia site, which will eventually supply the AGM Italy plant with blocks of extruded graphite
  • Contribution of around €17 million to Mersen sales and a higher operating margin before
    non-recurring items than the Group

Paris, December 3, 2019 – Mersen (Euronext FR0000039620 – MRN), a global expert in electrical power and advanced materials, has announced the acquisition of Advanced Graphite Materials Italy S.R.L. (AGM) from the Reineke family, a long-standing player in graphite and carbon fiber insulation.

Luc Themelin, Mersen’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am delighted to welcome the AGM teams to Mersen. This transaction is an excellent addition to our investment in the Columbia site in the United States. With Columbia, we were able to broaden our expertise with the production of specialty extruded graphite. With AGM, we will be able to process this extruded graphite and more particularly meet the needs of today’s fast-growing solar and electronics markets.”

The acquisition will give the Advanced Materials segment access to the facilities it needs to process specialty extruded graphite in Europe. It will strengthen the Group’s positions in Italy, Germany and Central Europe, especially in the electronics and heat processing markets that need large parts, and will eventually be supplied by the Columbia site.

The transaction price is €10 million.

Based in Malonno, Lombardy (Italy), AGM boasts more than 90 years’ experience in the machining and purification of carbon-based parts, including large parts. The site is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 standards and was part of the Graftech Group until 2017. The company employs some 40 people and generated sales of about €17 million.

The business will be consolidated in Mersen’s financial statements from December 1, 2019 as part of the Advanced Materials segment.
